Peace of Change
WMP 50448: $65

This major piece begins with a lengthy introduction in 9/8 (in a fanfare-ish manner), changing to 3/4 that at first features trumpets, then the entire ensemble and develops into a lyrical but still rhythmic theme. The main melodic statement occurs with melded instruments (2 altos, 2 trumpets,  1 trombone) over a Latin bass pattern. The solo section goes into double time, but later alternates between double time and the Latin half-time. After the solo section more ensemble development occurs before a return to the main thematic material that builds to a flourishing dramatic finish.
Solos: trumpet; chord changes cued for alto, tenor, bari, trombone and guitar
No doubles
Optional parts for French horns (alternate parts for Tpt 5-6 provided), tuba, and percussion (mallets and hand-percussion). Also provided: optional 1st woodwind part for soprano sax/flute/piccolo (optional)

Cloud Fields
WMP 50449: $60

This short composition (2 pages) has a sweeping angular melodic line initially stated in the low instruments over a Latin (Bolero) rhythm. The melody works its way upward through different sections, and after its full statement, gives way to an impressionistic interlude. A more dramatic restatement of the theme follows a short and light “cool” tenor saxophone solo. The tune ends softly with a surprising but understated chord change.
Solos: tenor sax
2 versions of woodwind parts provided:
            1) Doubles: 1. Alto sax/flute; 2. Alto sax/flute; 3. Tenor sax/clarinet; 4. Tenor sax/clarinet; 5. Bari sax/bass clarinet [this version is preferred]
            2) All saxes, no doubles
Optional parts for French horns (alternate parts for Tpt 5-6 provided), tuba, and percussion (mallets and hand-percussion).

Horizon Under
WMP 50446: $65

This is a powerful piece with a strong theme initially stated in the middle-low instruments. The even-eighth style is neither Latin nor Rock but has a driving distinctive rhythmic pattern in the drums. After an intro with floating rhythm over which are fanfare-ish trumpets, the driving beat and motivic theme is established in trombones, baritone, guitar and French horn (optional). Orchestral in color and dramatic in shape, the melodic section opens to a trumpet solo, followed by alto (or soprano) and tenor saxophone solos (trading). The easy solo changes are few and modal.
Solos: trumpet, alto sax (or soprano), tenor sax
Woodwind doubles: 2 sets of woodwind parts are provided. One with no doubles, another (preferred) with 1. flute/soprano, 2. flute/alto, 3. tenor/clarinet, 4. tenor/clarinet, 5. bari.. The two versions can be mixed.
Mutes: Tpts-Straights, Cups, Harmons (no trombone mutes needed)
Optional parts for French horns (alternate parts for flugelhorns or tpt 5-6 provided), tuba, and percussion (mallets and hand-percussion).

Poetry
WMP 50447: $40

This is a colorful tone-piece, slow in tempo, and orchestral in nature. Starting in piano, then progressing to woodwinds, finally reinforced in the brass, the intricate and angularly dramatic theme, constantly shifting in color and texture, spins out in an attractively harmonic fashion. No high trumpet range. No solos. No doubles.
Optional parts for French horns (alternate parts for flugelhorns or tpt 5-6 provided), tuba, and percussion (mallets and hand-percussion)

WMP 50402  Believe In Spring Fantasy- $130 This original composition is based on the beautiful Michel LeGrand melody with a similar title. The piece can optionally start with piano solo alone (written out) stating the melody. The saxes drift in over a medium slow swing rhythm which, in turn introduces the full ensemble, stating the melody again in augmentation. This gives way to a faster rhythm which leads to an alto sax solo over harmonic pedals. A middle ensemble section (slower 12/8 feel) spins out thematic motivic development, followed by the faster swing tempo again. Trumpet ad lib solo over the song changes lead to a dramatic shout chorus. The ending is spectacular, in a slow tempo, lush and full. Solos: alto sax, trumpet. Woodwind doubles: 2 sets of woodwind parts are provided. One with no doubles, another (preferred) with 1 alto/flute, 2 alto/oboe (can be flute), 3 tenor/clarinet, 4 tenor clarinet, 5.bari/bass clar. The two versions should not be mixed.

The original version recorded by the Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra CD "Refractions".

50432 "Variations"- $60 This original Kim Richmond composition (revised and simplified 1999) is a tribute to (and quasi-imitation of) the Bill Russo mid-fifties era pieces for the Stan Kenton Orchestra. The variations showcase more concerted ensemble double-time and a short alto sax ad lib solo passage, then concludes with screaming 1st trumpet over a wall-of-sound tutti. After a short piano solo interlude, a second ensemble section with shifting tonalities leads to the solo section. Solos: alto sax, trumpet (chords for trb/tenor) No WW dbls; extra flute part included.
Recorded on Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra CD "Refractions" Origin 82413 and on Jim Widner Big Band CD "Body and Soul" on Chase Music 8048

50436 TRAINS-$90. The main section starts with a written piano Latin vamp pattern. The theme, stated by octave brass, is a 24-bar blues. The solo section is followed by ensemble development of unison and octave lines, a brief sax soli and drum solo section. The rhythm section style is straight-8th swing drums over a Latin bass pattern. The lengthy (2-1/2 minute) "Prologue" section is a rubato dramatic tone poem and may be used as a separate orchestral-styled composition, or as and intro to this or any other piece. A small group version of this composition is heard on the recording of the Kim Richmond Ensemble "Looking In Looking Out" on USA Music 630. Solos: changes for alto (or soprano), tenor, bari, tpt, trb, gtr WW dbls: 2 sets of WW parts (flutes only used on "Prologue"): I. 1. alto (or soprano)/flute; 2. alto/fl; 3. tenor/fl; 4. tenor; 5. bari II. 5 saxes + flute part

50537 "Trump Card I" -$65. This piece, formerly known as the Trump Card Suite, is now the a movement of that Suite featuring trumpet soloists. This first movement spotlights the trumpet soloist with a strong high register. It starts with a slow steamy swing, the soloist leading off with melody over full ensemble. The main section is Latin, with the solo trumpet introducing each phrase which is then taken up by the different sections, overlaying one over another. This gives way to a full compelling samba melody over which the soloist can stretch out. The middle section can be more trumpet solo, or feature the drums and percussion. The full samba eventually returns and the piece ends with the slower swing, the soloist accentuating high notes with a flourish over a triumphal ending.
No woodwind doubles. Trumpet soloist high note: D, optional high F. Written for trumpet soloist Mike Vax.
Recorded by the “Live” The Jim Widner Big Band “Rides Again.”

50438 "Augustana"-$60 The style is "African" Latin, 6 beats of triplets, taken in a slow three. Although this piece can be performed without extra percussion, it is greatly enhanced by them. Several Cascara or bell patterns and a conga pattern are shown at the end of the drum and percussion parts. Other rhythm instruments can be used as well (shaker, guiro, etc.). The theme has a soaring melodic quality over the churning rhythm. The middle section is exactly half time (in 4/4). The first trumpet is featured with solo melodic statements throughout, a high D near the end.
Ad lib solo is written for WW 3 (tenor sax), with changes cued in for WW 1 (sopr sx), WW 2 (alto), tpt 3, trb 2 and guitar.
Woodwind doubles: WW 1 on soprano sax. Tpt mutes: Harmon, cup, straight

50439 "Range"- $70 A rearrangement and orchestration of the combo title selection from the Kim Richmond/Clay Jenkins Ensemble CD (on Nine Winds 172), this version presents a rubato dramatic introduction before the piano pattern establishes the mood of the piece (even-eigths, but not Rock). The orchestra is divided into several different color layers as it spins out the melody line. The second section has concerted building tutti with jutting sporadic chords underpinning a drum solo. A wild transition leads to the solo section (a 40-bar repeated section)
Solos: bari sax, tpt, trb (cued for tenor sx, gtr)
No woodwind doubles.

50440 "Trump Card II"- $80 This second movement of The Trump Card Suite features duo jazz trumpets in an up-tempo line over the ensemble. A spritely melodic line is followed by the two soloists alternately trading 8-bar ad lib solos. The main solo section is largely over one tonal center while the ensemble provides dramatic punctuations. There is plenty of spaces for the jazz trumpet soloists to blow (in two spots they improvise together), and they are interspersed with ensemble sections.
No woodwind doubles.

Recorded by the “Live” The Jim Widner Big Band “Rides Again.”

50441 "Viridian"-$80 The bass line pattern provides the foundation for this Latin flavored piece, perhaps evoking images (with its exotic melodic line, featuring cup-muted trumpets against woodwinds) of "South Seas" locales. The title is the term for a shade of green. The half-time and double-time do not signal a change in feel, which stays basically the same throughout. At some spots, the drums changes to more of a march-like beat, hopefully with a syncopated jazz approach.
. Solos: Trb 2 (cued for alto sax, tenor sax); guitar (cued for tpt 3)
2 sets of Woodwind parts: Version 1 (preferred version): 1.-alto sax/clarinet/flute; 2.-alto sax/clarinet; 3.-tenor sax/clarinet. 4.-tenor sax/clarinet 5.-baritone sax/bass clarinet. Version 2 is saxophones only.
Tpt mutes are strongly suggested to accomplish the proper sound of the piece (tpt 1: cup and Harmon; tpt 2: cup; tpt 3: cup and straight; tpt 4: cup and straight). Trbs need no mutes.

50442 "Fall Ascending"-$65 This composition is drawn basically from one 2-measure melodic/rhythmic figure. The rhythm is even-eighths with the melodic lines, often sequential development of the main motif, combining the instrumental sections and weaving over harmonic pedals. Recorded by the Kenton Alumni Band on tour.
Ad lib solos: WW 1, with optional solo changes for WW3 (tenor), trumpet 3, trombone 2 and guitar.
Woodwind doubles: WW 1 on soprano sax (alternate part provided for alto); WW 5 on bass clarinet (alternate part provided for baritone)
Mutes: Tpt 1, 2, 3 Cups, Tpt 4 Cup and Harmon ; Trb 1, 2, 3: plungers (opt.)
Recorded by the Mike Vax Big Band “Love On the Road”

50443 "Big Pocket" $65.00 This is straight down the middle basic jazz swing, at a comfortable middle tempo waling groove (120). Lots of ensemble, shout choruses, loud and soft. Written in a basic Thad Jones style, the beginning theme is light muted brass and saxes with flute on top. The solo section is a slightly extended blues featuring tenor sax and trombone. A meaty sax soli is followed by a soft ensemble shout which then builds extensively to a long full-blown tutti. If you like basic "in the pocket" stuff, you'll like this one. Alto 1 dbls flute. Opt'l parts for French horns, tuba, and percussion.
Recorded by the Jim Widner Big Band “Flying High”

50444 "Trump Card III" $70.00 The third movement of the Trump Card Suite is sub-titled "Davey," and is a pretty ethereal, but at the same time expressive, melody over light orchestral-type underpinnings and harmonic pedals. There is amply opportunity for the soloist to play melody and also improvisationally stretch out (easy chord changes) when the piece progresses to an aggressive double-time swing. This is one for your lyrical trumpet soloist. Solos: Trumpet. No doubles. Optional parts for French horns, tuba, and percussion.
